New Victorian Retirement Villages Act gives residents more power to keep companion pets

Victorians living in retirement villages will soon have greater rights to keep pets, thanks to the Retirement Villages Amendment Bill 2024, which passed recently. The new law will come into effect on 1 May 2026.

Under the updated rules, retirement villages can no longer enforce policies that “unreasonably limit” residents from keeping pets in their homes.

This change has been warmly welcomed by Companion Animal Network Australia (CANA), who called it a “significant and compassionate win” for older Australians and their beloved animals.

“This sends a powerful message that companion animals matter – they’re part of the family,” said CANA CEO Trish Ennis.

“Many older Australians face the heartbreaking loss of a cherished pet, along with the daily joy, comfort, and sense of purpose that comes with pet companionship.”

CANA congratulated all the parliamentarians who supported the bill and is now urging other states and territories to follow Victoria’s lead.

“This isn’t just a Victorian issue – it’s a national one,” Ennis added. “Research consistently shows pets help reduce loneliness, lower stress, and improve heart and mental health – all especially important for older Australians.”

For retirement village residents, this law means more freedom to enjoy the companionship of pets, enhancing their wellbeing and quality of life.
