Being among like-minded people in an advanced stage of life can let you roll back the years.
Mark Parry, Trevor Rix and Guy Scruton never knew each other before deciding to spend their retirement at GemLife’s Pimpama land lease community on the Gold Coast.
They are passionate and talented musicians who lived next door and across the street from one another. Now they are The Gemtones and have quickly become the go-to entertainment for resort events.
Formed roughly a year ago, The Gemtones cover everything from the 1950s through to the 2000s, bringing a lively blend of nostalgic favourites and timeless classics to every performance. They have an authentic sound and possess electric energy.
Trevor, a former drummer from the NSW South Coast, leads the band with his vocals and guitar work, infusing every track with raw emotion and charisma. Guy adds depth with his keyboard mastery, saxophone flair, and backing vocals, while Mark anchors the trio with his dynamic guitar playing and rhythmic vocal harmonies.
From major celebrations like Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and Australia Day, to laid-back impromptu sets, The Gemtones have built a loyal following among residents. And with the highly anticipated opening of the GemLife Gold Coast Country Club later this month, the band is looking forward to turning up the volume – and the vibe – on a whole new stage.
The Gemtones aren’t just a band – they’re a testament to creativity and the joy of sharing music with friends and neighbours. And they’re not alone. The musical talent at the resort also includes piano accordionist Gordon Adams, who holds his own with many solo performances for residents.
The opportunities are endless in retirement living.
