“I plan the menu, handle the shopping, and run the kitchen like a restaurant – after all, we can’t keep our diners waiting!” Ken says with a smile.
The group’s culinary skills have come a long way from those early roasts. They now serve up lasagne, beef ragout, risotto, and even a crowd-favourite chicken roulade. For just $15 per person, residents enjoy a restaurant-style meal right at home.
And it’s not just about dinner. Ken and the team prepare “wellness meals” – frozen leftovers packaged and offered free to residents who are recovering from surgery or illness.
“It’s our way of looking after the community. Everyone deserves a nourishing meal, especially when they’re not feeling their best,” says Ken.
More than just meals
The cooking group has become about much more than food. It’s a source of camaraderie, confidence, and connection.
“The conversations we have while cooking are wide-ranging and heartfelt. Some of us were just neighbours before – now we’re mates who holiday and cruise together with our partners,” Ken shares.
Though demand for more dinner events is high, Ken reminds everyone with a grin, “I’m actually retired!”
But in the kitchen at Aveo Shortland Waters, it’s clear Ken has found a new kind of calling – one that blends purpose, passion, and plenty of good company.
