Cooking up friendship and purpose in retirement

Ken Harris wasn’t planning on launching a new venture when he moved into Aveo Shortland Waters Retirement Living in Newcastle, NSW. But it didn’t take long before he spotted an opportunity to make a difference – and bring people together.

“I noticed a lot of the older men here didn’t cook much, or stuck to the basics,” says Ken, who spent his career working in top hotels like the Hilton and Hyatt, running restaurants, and teaching hospitality at TAFE.

Drawing on his experience and passion for food, Ken launched a cooking group for men in the community. The idea was simple: help them build confidence in the kitchen and create new friendships along the way.

“Our first meal was a two-course roast with apple crumble,” he recalls. “The community’s commercial kitchen and dining space made it the perfect setting.”

From neighbours to mates

What started as a casual gathering has grown into a group of eight regulars who now confidently cook meals for up to 75 residents and their partners.

“I plan the menu, handle the shopping, and run the kitchen like a restaurant – after all, we can’t keep our diners waiting!” Ken says with a smile.

The group’s culinary skills have come a long way from those early roasts. They now serve up lasagne, beef ragout, risotto, and even a crowd-favourite chicken roulade. For just $15 per person, residents enjoy a restaurant-style meal right at home.

And it’s not just about dinner. Ken and the team prepare “wellness meals” – frozen leftovers packaged and offered free to residents who are recovering from surgery or illness.

“It’s our way of looking after the community. Everyone deserves a nourishing meal, especially when they’re not feeling their best,” says Ken.

More than just meals

The cooking group has become about much more than food. It’s a source of camaraderie, confidence, and connection.

“The conversations we have while cooking are wide-ranging and heartfelt. Some of us were just neighbours before – now we’re mates who holiday and cruise together with our partners,” Ken shares.

Though demand for more dinner events is high, Ken reminds everyone with a grin, “I’m actually retired!”

But in the kitchen at Aveo Shortland Waters, it’s clear Ken has found a new kind of calling – one that blends purpose, passion, and plenty of good company.
