When exploring retirement villages or land lease communities, I’ve spoken with many people who moved from completely different areas. Whether it’s to be closer to family, friends, or healthcare services, one thing many people consider is the location.
One couple I spoke with, who had raised their children in a large home in Mount Isa, Queensland, made the decision to retire closer to their daughter. They were drawn to Hometown Australia’s Sunrise community in Port Stephens, just a short two-and-a-half-hour drive away. They told me, “We’ve always wanted to live by the sea, and we got the bush thrown in too! There’s so much to do both inside and outside the resort.”
Things to think about when downsizing from the family home
Access to healthcare It’s always reassuring to have healthcare options close by. Choosing a retirement village or land lease community near hospitals, doctors, pharmacies, and allied health services can provide peace of mind in case of medical needs.
Social and recreational activities Retirement is all about enjoying life, and many communities offer plenty of opportunities for socialising and recreation. From travel to fitness activities, you’ll find a range of things to do. Plus, it’s nice to have restaurants nearby that offer discounts with a Seniors Card.
3. Climate and environment

Think about how much the climate matters to you. For example, in Mount Isa, temperatures often exceed 40°C in the summer, while in Port Stephens, you’ll enjoy a milder 30°C with a refreshing ocean breeze. Being in a place where you love the weather and environment can make a big difference to your comfort and happiness. Whether it’s beach walks, river picnics, or bush hikes, a location you enjoy can greatly improve your quality of life.
Transportation and accessibility As we get older, getting around can become more difficult. Look for a retirement village in an area that’s easy to navigate. Being near public transport, having walking paths, or even a shuttle bus service can help you maintain independence and easily access services, errands, and visits with family.
Family and friends Many retirees want to stay close to family and friends. A village near your loved ones can make frequent visits easier and prevent feelings of isolation. While families are always welcome, many people are surprised by how quickly they make new friends within their village or resort community.
Retirement is the perfect time to pursue your passions. Look for a place that offers plenty of opportunities to explore hobbies or take on new activities. Communities often have cultural attractions, volunteer opportunities, or places to learn, keeping you intellectually engaged and enjoying life outside the village.
