12 months ago, the Retirement Village Residents Association (RVRA) released the survey, Ageing Without Fear, conducted across 120 NSW villages and 1,259 residents.

40% of residents have experienced abuse: first with residents and their families, and second with retirement village operators.

The RVRA then partnered with the DCM Institute to host two webinars on the research results.

RVRA/DCM Institute webinar with Dr Diane Hart, Vice President, Roger Pallant, Secretary. James Wiltshire, DCM Institute Executive Director, Craig Bennett, President, Roger Pallant, Secretary, and Tamara Rasmussen, Head of Resident Operations at Keyton.

The RVRA has subsequently held meetings with the NSW Ageing & Disability Commission and the Property Council of Australia’s Retirement Living Council.

A one-page Statement of Respect, released to mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, was agreed to by the three bodies.

Roger Pallant (second left) with Daniel Gannon, Retirement Living Council Executive Director, Oliver Luckhurst-0Smith, RLC’s National Policy Manager, Tony Massaro, Partner – KordaMentha Real Estate, and Tamara.

Roger Pallant, RVRA Secretary, said it would be great if all village managers put this statement prominently where it can be seen by the majority of residents.
