When Nicola and Scott Simonds started planning their next chapter, they knew one thing for sure – they were bringing Nicola’s mum, Mavis, along for the ride.

The couple, currently living in Burpengary, will soon move into their new home at GemLife Moreton Bay, a land lease lifestyle resort in southeast Queensland. Their decision wasn’t just about downsizing – it was about upgrading their lifestyle while staying close as a family.

“It’s the start of a whole new life for us,” said Scott, a former warehouse manager.

Nicola, a retired health department executive, explained that while Mavis had been living independently in a granny flat attached to their house, her support needs were growing. Their new home, a Goodall design, makes multi-generational living easy.

“The layout creates a private space at the front of the house for Mum, with her own bathroom and room to relax,” Nicola said. “We’ll be under one roof, but with privacy and comfort for all of us.”

What sealed the deal? The peaceful surroundings, lakes and green spaces, plus no rear neighbours. After five years of looking, GemLife Moreton Bay ticked every box.

And it’s not just the house. Scott is excited about the lifestyle – especially the bowling green, gym, movie theatre, and community events.

“My dad taught me lawn bowls when I was 15, so having a green on-site is a dream,” he said.

For Mavis, the move will offer greater social connection and freedom. The resort’s accessible paths and vibrant community mean she can join in as much or as little as she likes.

Nicola has even been connecting with future neighbours through the resort’s Facebook group.

“We’ve already organised lunches and meetups – it means we won’t feel like strangers when we move in,” she said.

Their story is a great reminder that retirement living doesn’t have to mean separation. With the right home and community, families can stay together and thrive – at any age.
