Residents and staff of Murraylands Retirement Village in Murray Bridge, SA, are putting their best foot forward for a good cause – joining the Walk a Mile in My Boots challenge to raise money for South Australians doing it tough.
The annual event, run by Hutt St Centre during National Homelessness Week (4–10 August), invites participants to walk in solidarity with people experiencing homelessness – and raise vital funds to help them rebuild their lives.
This year, the Murraylands team is already making a big impact, raising over $6,000 through community fundraising efforts – and they’re not done yet.
“I just thought, what a great idea – and I love walking, so it’s a win-win really,” said Lynn Hawkes, a new resident who’s joined the challenge for the first time. She’s already raised $1,700, helping drive the team’s efforts since fundraising kicked off in early July.
“I wanted to do something to give back to the community,” she said.
From garage sales to generous donations from friends and family, the Murraylands community has rallied behind the cause. On Friday, 8 August, residents and staff will take part in a community walk at Victoria Park in Murray Bridge.
Village manager Rowena Fox said she’s constantly inspired by the residents’ dedication.
“It’s pretty amazing when you think of what they’re doing,” she said. “They’re not doing this for themselves – they’re doing it to support people who need help the most. That kind of community spirit is really special.”
Hutt St Centre provides meals, showers, medical care, housing support and more to people facing homelessness in Adelaide. Their work is grounded in dignity, compassion, and respect – helping people rediscover their strength and reconnect with those who love them.
The Walk a Mile challenge gives everyday Australians a chance to walk alongside them – and show they care.
