Retirement living is about more than just a place to live – it’s about being part of a community where your passions can thrive and your ideas can come to life.

At Lakeside by Teman in Ravenswood, 88km south of Perth, residents Anne and Rick have shown just how easily a simple idea can bring people together. Lifelong ukulele enthusiasts, the pair suggested starting a casual weekly session for anyone keen to strum along or give it a try.

With the support of a local teacher and the backing of Village Manager Cheryl Finlay, the Friday afternoon ukulele group quickly grew into a fun and social event. Every week, residents gather in the village TV room from 1-3pm to play, learn, and share a few songs – along with plenty of laughs.

Now, Cheryl is encouraging the group to take centre stage at the village’s upcoming Open Day, just like the popular Lakeside Singers have done in the past.

“It’s the residents who make a village come alive,” says Cheryl. “Ideas like this start small – all it takes is a little imagination and the support of a connected community.”

Whether it’s music, gardening, volunteering or just catching up with friends over coffee, life in a retirement village is what you make it. You don’t have to join every activity – but if you’ve got a passion, you might just find others who share it.

Because in a retirement community, the possibilities are endless – and the fun is just getting started.
