James Milson Village (JMV), a cornerstone of North Sydney’s community, will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Sunday, 22 September 2024, with a commemorative ceremony and afternoon tea from 12pm to 3pm.

The event will honour JMV’s rich history and its continued commitment to providing a vibrant, caring environment for older Australians. JMV has 99 apartments (single rooms with ensuite; single room with shared bathroom facilities; double rooms with ensuite, and double room with shared bathroom facilities).

Founded in 1974 as the largest project of its kind in North Sydney Council’s history and the first retirement village built by a local government in NSW, JMV has grown into a thriving community that embodies the values of care, connection and dignity.

In recognition of his pivotal role in the founding of JMV, Michael O’Dea, a key figure in the Village’s history, will serve as the esteemed patron for the 50th-anniversary celebration. Michael’s ongoing commitment to addressing isolation, loneliness and housing challenges among the ageing community continues to resonate deeply with the values upheld by James Milson Village.

Brad Williams (pictured), CEO of James Milson Village, reflected on the importance of the milestone:

“Fifty years is a remarkable achievement, and it stands as a testament to the dedication of our staff, volunteers and the entire community. JMV is not just a place to reside; it is a home, a place where friendships flourish and independence is supported.”

The anniversary celebration will feature a short commemorative ceremony at 12.30pm, live music, lunch and afternoon tea, creating an afternoon of reflection and community spirit. The event will also include a reading of a letter from the Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
